Five Steps for Shipping Your Car

Shipping cars

Are you interested in shipping cars across state, or across country? Here are five steps for choosing a responsible and affordable company that specializes in shipping cars.

First, find several companies you are interested in, and go to their website for a quote. Enter your information correctly so that you receive an accurate rate. Since the quotes are for standard passenger vehicles, keep in mind that modified cars will usually cost more. If you work in an industry that uses car shippers often, ask around and see if people can give you ideas of companies to talk to.

Second, once you have a decent list of auto transport companies and estimated prices, do research. Most shipping cars companies now have reviews posted about them online, and this can give you an idea of their average customer satisfaction before and after the move. Check that your company is insured.

Third, do not go with the lowest price just because it appears to be the cheapest. Some car transport companies more or less scam you with the price, only to find that no carrier will move you for that price, forcing you to pay more for the company. Also keep in mind that shipping cars costs less, on average, during the middle of the week and the middle of the month, so research your options and if you are flexible with your leaving time, see if that can make a difference in price.

Fourth, after you pick a company, get your car ready for transport. Take valuable items like GPS units out of your car if you were keeping them there. Keep less than a quarter of a tank of gas in your car, since it will decrease the cost of transportation, a savings which will usually be passed on to you.

Fifth, make sure your car or cars are inspected by the vehicle transport carrier. Any damage should be noted in a report and given to you. Also take time to inspect for any dents or scratches, since after you leave, you will not have the grounds to claim that it happened during transport rather than on your drive home, et cetera.
