Advertising these days doesn’t just mean throwing up some signs outside of your business and taking an ad out in the paper. As with everything else, advertising has moved online, and though there are a number of different parts of doing it, one of the most important is search engine optimization. Here is what you need to know about what SEO is, how to increase visibility with SEO, and how to know if you need to outsource to an SEO company.

1. What is Search Engine Optimization?
Search engine optimization, better known in the internet marketing world as SEO, is basically a set of practices that help increase a website’s ranking in search engine results. There are a number of different search engine optimization strategies, but an important part of it is content marketing, which refers to the practice of creating information-rich, valuable, interesting and original content for the purpose of inspiring action in a customer. There are a plethora of others, but this is one of the most important.

2. Why is it Important?
SEO is important because it’s going to put your website where your customers want to find it. More than 90% of experiences online start with a search engine, and it’s how people find products, services, and information that they’re looking for. One of the reasons SEO is so effective is that it helps a website rank organically, as opposed to paid placement. About three quarters — between 70% and 80% of search engine users prefer to click on organic results.

3. Do I Need to Outsource?
This depends on a few different things. Outsourcing SEO for small businesses is a good idea if you don’t have the time or the know-how to keep up with it. SEO is not a time time effort — it’s something that needs constant upkeep and changes to keep up with algorithm changes and what are considered good practices. Additionally, good SEO means know what those good practices are and how to respond the them accordingly.
